Orwell's skill, it seems to me, is to make his prophetic, philosophic works so easy to read. With the easy style of a contemporary novelist you are transported to the most immaculately conceived future world ever created. Copied and parodied innumerable times, I was apprehensive before I began to read, but the quality and depth of imagination draws the reader irresistably in. Engrossing and thought provoking and very, very worrying.

This is definitely the book of the century - It presents a disturbing picture of the depths man can lead himself to, Orwell combinines his own interpretations of a totalitarian society with the phemomenon of Newspeak, which alone would have been sufficient to explain the main principles...I have forced this book on my friends and family - It must be read.

If you read no other book this year, make sure you read this one. I couldn't put it down and remained on the edge of my seat until the last tantilizing page. Although written earlier this century, it shows uncanny similarities to todays society. This book will infiltrate your dreams, and convince you that you are living in 1984.

to read this book is to turn your old prejudices upside-down. the characters are amazing, but it is the social message that it holds that makes it a must. book of the century.
